You're not the only curious one...
What is NFP?
NFP (Natural Family Planning) is not a method of family planning rather it is a generic name for a group of methods that does not use any artificial chemicals or products that chemically alter, control, interfere, surgically alter, interrupt or destroy any aspect of reproduction in a man or woman. The Creighton Model is a method of NFP, but also contains a reproductive health monitoring component as well (NaProTechnology).
What if I have something funky going on?
This system can be used effectively for those with irregular cycles, as well as women who are peri-menopausal, coming off the pill or other hormonal contraceptives, breastfeeding, experiencing post-partum depression, PCOS, PMS or anovulatory for whatever reason. In fact, if you "have something funky going on", this method has the additional benefit of giving you more information so that you can make informed decisions about what to do about it.
How much does this program cost?
The cost is $40 per one-hour visit. So, with the Introductory Session and eight follow-ups, plus $40 for materials, you'll spend $400 for the first year's instruction and all the materials you will need. After that, you'll probably need only one or two follow-ups a year. We also provide a sliding scale if finances are a little tight. The bottom line is that we teach anyone who comes regardless of the ability to pay.
Why so many follow ups?
We've discovered that frequent follow ups in the beginning of learning how to chart help people to learn the system as quickly and effectively as possible. It may seem a little daunting, but the vast majority of couples are appreciative for the more intense beginning as we have a lot of information to share.
How long does it take to learn the Creighton Model?
Most clients have a solid understanding of charting basics within the first two months of charting. However, if you have irregular cycles or many health concerns, it can take longer to increase confidence in the method. We recommend that engaged couples start follow ups six months prior to their wedding. However, we are happy to work with you no matter what your timeline is.
Is this the rhythm method?
No.
How effective is the Creighton Model FertilityCare System?
1. TO ACHIEVE A PREGNANCY: Conception will occur 76% of the time in the first cycle of using a defined day of fertility.
2. TO AVOID A PREGNANCY: The FertilityCare™ System is over 99% effective in avoiding pregnancy when properly taught by a qualified teacher and then correctly applied (perfect use). In a peer-reviewed journal article, the typical use effectiveness was found to be 96.8% to avoid pregnancy*. This means that Creighton Model is among one of the most effective forms of family planning available.
3. WITH INFERTILITY: 20%-40% of couples will achieve pregnancy with the FertilityCare™ System only, using fertility-focused intercourse. Up to 80% will conceive with additional cooperative medical assistance. See here for more information.

How does the Creighton Model FertilityCare System work?
Creighton Model determines a woman's fertility or infertility based on various biological markers, most notably cervical mucus. It requires no internal checks and no temperature taking. The woman routinely checks for cervical mucus throughout the day as part of her normal hygiene routine and then charts her most fertile sign of the day. We can correlate the cervical mucus with a hormonal surge that comes prior to the time of ovulation, informing a woman that her fertile time is here and that ovulation is approaching.
What are advantages of a natural method of family planning?
No chemicals, no artificial hormones, no barriers, no side effects. Extremely effective (see above). Facilitates communication and is a shared system between spouses. What more could you want?
Why did my doctor not tell me about this?
Unfortunately, NFP has become a much scoffed at notion in this day and age. Despite the scientific background that underlies this method, many doctors don't think that women will be able to use a natural method of family planning effectively, either because they don't understand how it works or they think that couples will be unable or unwilling to abstain during times of fertility. Additionally, natural family planning is not taught as a viable method of family planning in most medical schools.
What sort of training do practitioners have?
Every practitioner is trained with a 13 month long program that includes classroom work and practical applications while working with a supervisor. Additionally, our center, the FertilityCare Center of Kansas City, has been a member of the American Academy of FertilityCare™ Professionals (AAFCP) for over ten years and has been part of the FertilityCare™ Centers of America (FCCA) for over 30 years. Quality instruction in the Creighton Model FertilityCare System is assured by these two organizations.
Is learning the Creighton Model covered by insurance?
At this time, practitioners are able to give you a receipt to submit to your insurance company. Some reimburse, some don't. Employees of the KC-SJ Diocese and KCK Archdiocese are able to get part or all of their fees reimbursed.
